NHMI Advisor Wins Teaching Award
Pamela J. Russell, PhD is a long-standing member of the NHMI
Advisory Board who has made great contributions to our Athletic
Training Fellowship program. Dr. Russell is a full professor in the
Department of Movement Arts, Health Promotion and Leisure Studies, and
Director of the Biomechanics Laboratory at Bridgewater State College
in Massachusetts. Her excellence as a teacher was recently recognized
by Bridgewater when she received the school's 2010 Presidential Award
for Distinguished Teaching. NHMI extends its congratulations to Dr.
Russell.
2010-2011 Athletic Training Fellows Selected
Nora Beltz, MS, ATC will receive her Masters in athletic training from
Plymouth State University in May 2010. She received her BA in biology
from Colby (Maine) College and worked briefly in that field before
deciding to pursue athletic training. The Fellowship, she believes,
will make her a better athletic trainer by exposing her to multiple
physicians/professionals in the sports medicine team and significantly
broadening her experience. Nora enjoys multiple outdoor activities and
has done a fair amount of traveling including a study-abroad stint in
London.
Molly Day, ATC finished number 1 in the 2010 graduating class at the
University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse where she earned a BS in athletic
training. She is very excited about the incredible educational
opportunity the Fellowship offers and believes it will support her
pursuit of medical school afterwards. In addition to being an
excellent student, Molly is an accomplished artist, excelled as a
track & field athlete and plays the piano.
Reid Beauchemin Wins 2010 Letendre Scholarship
The
2010 Bertrand & Blanche Letendre Student Athletic Training Summer
School Scholarship has been awarded to Reid Beauchemin. Mr. Beauchemin
is homeschooled and attends Concord (NH) High School part time. This
scholarship provides funds for students interested in careers in the
sports medicine field of athletic training to attend a summer camp
focused on athletic training.
Three Abstracts Accepted for Presentation this Summer at NATA
(Philadelphia)
An abstract titled, “Characteristics
of Interactions between Certified Athletic Trainers and Emergency
Medical Services Personnel in Secondary School and Collegiate
Settings: A National Survey” will be presented in Philly. The
purpose of this study was to survey NATA members regarding on-field
interactions with EMS personnel. Congratulations to authors Laura
Decoster, Erik Swartz, Jennifer Hootman and Thomas Cappaert.
A subset of data from the same survey
investigated “Compliance with Evidence-Based Football Face Mask
Removal Recommendations in Clinical Athletic Training Practice.”
Three of the authors (Decoster, Swartz and Cappaert) have been very
involved in researching the best approach to removing the face mask to
allow airway access in on-field emergencies. However, no published
data have revealed the frequency with which this skill is required,
nor whether athletic trainers are following recommendations.
Finally, an abstract titled, “The
Influence of Leg Dominance on Coordination during a Closed-Chain
Tracking Task” was designed to determine whether non-dominant and
dominant legs have comparable coordination. The principal
investigators on this project were 2008-2009 Athletic Training
Fellows, Dawn Schisler and Sarah Philipp. Laura Decoster and Pam
Russell are also authors on this project.
